Looking back at 10 years of
Back in 1999, a small committee of members of an Orange County car club got together to try and find a suitable charity to be the focus of a car show. The members chose Prostate Cancer research based upon a suggestion presented to Debbie Baker by a co-worker. It was a natural choice as there was little publicity about the disease, and the men most affected were in the general range of the guys that owned hot rods. The first show was planned and took place at the Irvine Amphitheatre in Sept. 2000. It utilized the entire parking lot and was for both cars and motorcycles. As the morning of the show dawned, it began to rain.....and rain.....and rain some more!
However, in spite of the rain, over 400 cars, motorcycles, and vendors showed up to support the event! In those days, we had no idea that the show would grow to the size it is today. We had a few vendors, In-N-Out provided the food, and we had a lot of enthusiasm. After the show, the car club split and the new club, Hot Rods Unlimited, was formed in 2000. Debbie Baker and Ross Kroenert took on the responsibility to keep the show as an annual event and Hot Rods Unlimited's members are the host club providing much of the volunteer support for the show ever since. The show has saved over 1,000 men as a direct result of the on-site PSA testing at the show and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for prostate cancer research. The following links will take you through photos of the show over the years. (Photos by Don Yegan & Ross Kroenert)
